You work hard at creating your story, but sometimes you're just too close to it to see flaws in plotting, character development, narrative, dialogue, grammar and punctuation, or other elements of your story. Can others see the picture you are trying to paint with your words? Members of a writers group can give a friendly critique of your piece. By their comments you will be able to tell if you have been successful in your endeavors or whether you need to make adjustments to get the response you want.
It is inspiring to be around others who enjoy writing as much as you do. Even when you do not have a piece submitted for critique, you will always learn something as you critique the work of others and listen to the group's comments.
